"This hotel is within 5 minutes walk of the Old Town Square and 15 minutes walk to anything within Old Town. We even walked back from the Prague Castle (and you can probably walk to and from if you don't have small children, like we do). The rooms are small, but average for a European budget hotel, and they have everything you need. There's a shopping mall with a supermarket right next door, which is very handy. Unless you're going to splurge on a 5-star hotel, I would think this is one of your best choices for tourism in Prague (and I did a ton of online research)."

"The hotel is located 800m away from the historical centre, very near. Also the staff is very kind and the cleanliness of the rooms and halls is amazing. Breakfast is one of the best ones I’ve ever tried in any hotel, everything you want and more. (There is a pianist playing the piano while you’re having breakfast). I was leaving the hotel very early, before breakfast time, and nicely they prepared for me a couple of sandwiches, two pieces of fruit, biscuits and water. I’d recommend this hotel 100%. Great location (shopping mall, Lidl, and historical centre very near), great staff, very comfy beds and pillows.... One contra is the bath. It’s very high from the floor, and it’s difficult to reach it. If you’re a person with difficulties or any bones disease, please ask them first if they have a more accessible room for you. "

Uncovering the Secrets of Starý židovský hřbitov

Starý židovský hřbitov, or the Old Jewish Cemetery, is a remarkable testament to the rich history of the Jewish community in Prague. Established in the 15th century, this cemetery is one of the oldest in Europe and serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and resilience of the Jewish people throughout history. With over 12,000 tombstones, many of which are beautifully carved, the graveyard is a labyrinth of history that invites visitors to reflect on the past. The cemetery is particularly notable for its unique layering of graves, where bodies were buried on top of one another due to space constraints, resulting in a fascinating topography that tells a story of survival against the odds.

Among the notable figures interred here is Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, also known as the Maharal of Prague, a revered Talmudic scholar and philosopher. His legacy continues to influence Jewish thought today, and many visitors come specifically to pay their respects at his grave. The cemetery also houses the remains of other prominent Jewish personalities, including writers, scholars, and activists who contributed to the cultural and intellectual life of the Jewish community in Prague. Each gravestone not only marks a resting place but also serves as a historical artifact, offering insights into the lives and achievements of those buried beneath.

Walking through Starý židovský hřbitov is not just a stroll through a cemetery; it's an immersive experience that evokes deep emotions. The serene atmosphere, combined with the haunting beauty of the weathered tombstones, creates a space for contemplation and remembrance. As you explore, take the time to read the inscriptions and appreciate the artistry of the gravestones, many of which feature intricate designs and symbols that reflect the beliefs and values of the Jewish faith. This cemetery is not only a burial ground but a sacred site that encapsulates centuries of history, making it an essential stop for anyone interested in the cultural heritage of Prague.

Beyond its historical significance, the cemetery offers a serene atmosphere that invites reflection and contemplation. Visitors often describe the experience as peaceful, making it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the hectic pace of city life. Best Time to Explore Starý židovský hřbitov

The best time to visit Starý židovský hřbitov largely depends on your preferences for weather and crowd levels. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are often considered ideal times, as the weather is mild and the gardens in the area bloom with vibrant colors. During these months, the cemetery is less crowded, allowing for a more intimate experience as you wander through the historic grounds. The gentle breeze and blooming flowers create a picturesque setting that enhances the contemplative nature of your visit.

Summer can be quite warm in Prague, with temperatures often reaching into the high 20s Celsius (70s Fahrenheit). While the longer days provide ample time for exploration, the heat can make walking around less comfortable. However, if you don’t mind a bit of warmth, summer is also a lively time in the city, with various festivals and events taking place nearby. Just be sure to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade when needed.

Winter, on the other hand, transforms the cemetery into a serene, almost ethereal landscape. Snow can blanket the tombstones, creating a stark contrast against the dark stone and adding to the solemn atmosphere. While this time of year tends to be colder and may come with fewer daylight hours, the beauty of the cemetery in winter is undeniably captivating. Just be prepared for the chilly temperatures and dress warmly if you choose to visit during this season.
