Stayed at the New Hotel Otani for 7 nights. First impressions on arrival was Wow! Staff were friendly, professional and very welcoming and the hotel was buzzing. The place just felt amazing. We had arrived a little early and our room wasn’t ready, so we decided to have lunch in one of the hotels many restaurants, opting for Trader Vic’s. It did not disappoint, delicious, and in a beautiful setting overlooking the hotel gardens, waterfall and koi pond. A great start! We then checked in and were helped with our luggage to our room. However, upon entering our 13th floor room is when things took a distinct downwards turn. The room was extremely outdated. The furniture was antiquated and tired. The carpets dirty, and frayed, the first time I had seen this in my entire time in Japan, which usually involves high standards and shoeless rooms. The bathroom was from the 1980’s. I immediately addressed the issues with reception, who listened and told me that a staff member would come up to check the points I had made. This happened within 30 minutes, and an alternative room was made available around 30 minutes later. This was a fair bit smaller than our original room, but slightly better in terms of its carpet, which was still old and a bit worn our, but at least looked clean, the furniture was dated but didn’t look as bad as the first room, and the bathroom was exactly the same 1980’s non refurbished and smaller. The view was nice over the hotel gardens and swimming pool and out to the Akasaka area. We were tired and didn’t have the energy to debate, nor wait around for another room which may not have been any better, so accepted this change, albeit with a not exactly happy feeling. Breakfast was offered in a choice of 4 restaurants and we managed to eat in three of them. The Garden, The Tower and Satsuki which had an extra charge. The Garden had a beautiful setting, and looked very nice, the staff were efficient and friendly, but the food was just about ok, boiled sausages; bacon in water; cooked salmon, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, cold cuts, cheeses, breads, fruit etc, nothing wrong with any of it, just a bit lack lustre, and often the hot food was luke warm. This was exactly the same in the tower restaurant. We dined in the garden 4 of the seven days, the tower twice and once in satsuki, which delivered a breakfast just as we had been expecting of how this hotel should be doing breakfast, but it was with a supplement of around £10 per person. Not a lot, but adding breakfast on to the original room cost at time of booking was not cheap. So all in all our stay was one that had been eagerly anticipated as a highlight stay, but for the price point, the room standard we relieved and the standard breakfast left us with a feeling that we did not get what we expected nor value for money in comparison to the other hotels we stayed in in Japan which delivered so much more in room and breakfast quality at a much better price point.

We stayed here for 4 nights during our travels to Japan. The hotel staff were very courteous, prompt and went out of their way to help us, from arrival at bell hop to checkout. Every need was catered to. The rooms were nice and spacious and had all the amenities we needed. The garden was gorgeous, especially if you have breakfast at the Garden Lounge. This overlooks the garden with floor to ceiling views. Would stay here again.

I had a last minute stay of two nights and I'm glad I stayed at this hotel. Very helpful staff. The room was spacious and very clean. I didn't have a chance to try any of the restaurants but they looked good and would like to try next time.
