"I researched Hanoi hotels very carefully because we needed a central base to launch several trips from. The Skylark looked perfect - recently renovated, close enough to the frenzy of the old quarter to walk, but far enough removed to escape the madness when we needed to. The reality was even better than we had hoped. Clean, stylish, comfortable, and for once accurately described and photographed - we were happy straight away. However the one thing that you couldn't tell from the description was the excellence of the staff and the service they provided. Without exception, they were polite, attentive, professional without being aloof or distant, and extremely friendly and welcoming ...so much so we felt like family every time we returned. Of particular note was Mai on the front desk who helped with taxis, airport transfers, phone calls, directions and advice. Nothing was too much trouble. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone on service alone, but add the decor, location and comfort and it is a sure winner. PS - the question below about how pedestrian friendly is really funny and obviously written by someone who has never been :o)"

"we stayed at hotel nikko hanoi for 3 nights. it was a wonderful stay. front counter staffs were friendly and smily. there was a conceige counter manned by experienced japanese staff who speak fluent english, to give advise on what to do, where to eat and what to avoid (independent cabby)in hanoi. we have a spacious room at the 10th floor, facing a circus and lake from far away. the room was tranquil, in stark comparison to the hassles of hanoi street below. i enjoyed myself sitting by the window observing the people of hanoi commute on their bikes over a cup of coffee. there was a swimming pool but it seemed to be under utilised and no lifeguard/hotel staff around. the pool is located at the back of the hotel. its very quite and obscured, so be careful to let your kids swim in the pool unsupervised. we have tried one restaurant in the hotel. it was a paid breakfast as our booking does not include the breakfast. we paid about but kids under 5yrs old dined for free. it has a good spread of selection. the hotel has its own affiliate taxi fleet, so there will be a taxi always ready to fetch you anyway you wish and you can pay the cabby either vnd or usd or use credit card on these taxis. these cabbies charge a fixed rate if you are heading to the airport .if you plan to visit halong bay, you can take a private tour for a day trip but the journey is tiring. 4 hours on car to reach the nearest city. 4 hours on the cruise and then another 4 hours back. you may consider overnight stay on the junk and come back to hanoi fresher the next day. "Both the facilities and room in this hotel are excellent, clean, and a great value. The location is perfect in the heart of Old Hanoi. But it truly is the people who work here, who make it the best hotel in Hanoi. They are incredibly helpful, genuine, kind, and work extremely hard to make each visit special. In particular, Kate is an absolute star and has gone above and beyond in her duties from check in to departure to make our trip simply outstanding. When we return to Hanoi, we will be staying here again - highly recommended to all travelers. "
